Learning Objectives: As a result of this workshop, participants will:

  1. Understand executive functioning skills within the context of brain development.

  2. Be able to identify and recognize characteristics of students with ADHD

  3. Be able to identify how executive function skills impact school performance and daily living.

  4. Have access to a repertoire of strategies to improve executive functioning skills in students. These will include strategies to modify the environment to reduce the impact of weak executive skills and procedures such as coaching that can be used to teach children how to improve specific executive functioning skill deficits in the context of home or school performance expectations.

TEACHERS WORSHOP

Learning Objectives:
Through a combination of didactic presentations, learning activities, and hands-on practice, seminar participants will learn:

​

  1. To describe the brain processes involved in executive functioning skills development both in typically developing children and those with executive functioning skills dysfunction (such as ADHD).

  2. To identify how executive functioning skills impact school performance and daily living.

  3. “Best practices” in assessing executive functioning skills, including both formal and informal measures.

  4. To design interventions for improving executive functioning skills in students, including 
    a) how to make environmental modifications to support weak executive functioning skills, 
    b) how to develop protocols for teaching executive skills by embedding them in daily
    routines and classroom lessons, and 
    c) how to design student-centered interventions targeted to specific problem situations and executive functioning skill challenges.

  5. The critical features of a coaching method geared to improving school performance through supporting executive functioning skills development.

The first recipients in Jamaica will be Vaz Preparatory School - Kingston, Lannaman's Preparatory School - Kingston and  Gideon Educational Centre - Portland.
